Back-to-Back Aftershocks Jolt Davao Occidental; M6.0 and M5.3 Quakes Rattle Southern Mindanao

— Two strong earthquakes struck in quick succession off the coast of Balut Island on Monday afternoon, sending fresh waves of anxiety through communities across Southern Mindanao.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 6.0 earthquake at 4:11 PM, immediately followed by a magnitude 5.3 tremor just thirty minutes later at 4:41 PM. State seismologists have confirmed that both events are tectonic aftershocks stemming from the devastating Mw 7.8 Offshore Sarangani and Mw 6.5 Offshore Davao Occidental earthquakes that struck the region in June 2026.

Thirty Minutes of Shaking
The first, more powerful tremor registered a shallow depth of 18 kilometers. Its epicenter was located 47 kilometers south-southwest of Balut Island, within the municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
The initial shock was felt at Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) by residents in Sarangani and Malita, Davao Occidental. Ground shaking was strong enough to disturb indoor items and cause a noticeable rattling sensation. Meanwhile, General Santos City, along with Kiamba and Glan in Sarangani province, experienced the quake at Intensity III (Weak).
As local authorities were beginning to assess the situation, a second tremor with a magnitude of 5.3 hit at 4:41 PM, originating slightly further out at 56 km south-southwest of Balut Island at a depth of 20 kilometers. This subsequent quake registered an Intensity III in Sarangani (Davao Occidental) and Glan (Sarangani), and an Intensity II in Malita.
Instrumental seismic networks across the region also logged widespread low-level vibrations. The instruments recorded Intensity II and I movements stretching from Koronadal City and Digos City to as far as Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat.
Lingering Shadows of the June Megathrust Event
Southern Mindanao continues to experience elevated seismic activity following the catastrophic June 8, 2026, Mw 7.8 earthquake. That initial disaster, which was caused by subduction along the Cotabato Trench, claimed over 90 lives, left more than 1,300 people injured, and caused an estimated ₱71 billion in widespread structural damage across Region XI and Region XII.
Disaster management officials noted that while Monday’s twin aftershocks are substantially weaker than the original June megathrust event, they pose a continuous threat to buildings and infrastructure already weakened by the prior month's intense shaking.
Damage Assessment and Public Vigilance
Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs) have deployed engineering and assessment teams to evaluate coastal structures and public roads on Balut Island and the surrounding municipalities. Initial assessments indicate no major new infrastructure collapses or casualties directly caused by the Monday afternoon events, though the public is strictly advised to look out for developing structural cracks.
In a public advisory, PHIVOLCS reminded residents that aftershocks are expected to continue for several weeks to months given the immense energy released during the June earthquake sequence. State seismologists urge citizens to maintain their household emergency kits, map out local evacuation pathways, and practice the standard "Duck, Cover, and Hold" safety protocol whenever ground shaking occurs.
