Powerful 6.5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Davao Occidental; No Damage Expected

A powerful magnitude 6.5 tectonic earthquake struck off the coast of Balut Island on Friday evening, June 26, 2026, sending strong tremors across wide areas of Mindanao.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the submarine tremor at 7:34 PM. The epicenter was located 66 kilometers southwest of the island municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, at a depth of 45 kilometers.

Widespread Tremors Felt

State seismologists reported that the earthquake was felt at Intensity V (Strong) in General Santos City; Koronadal City, Lake Sebu, and T'boli in South Cotabato; Alabel, Kiamba, Malapatan, and Malungon in Sarangani; and Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat. Residents in these areas described the shaking as strong enough to disrupt balance and rattle household objects.

Meanwhile, Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) shaking was felt in Davao City; Glan, Maasim, and Maitum in Sarangani; Don Marcelino and Santa Maria in Davao Occidental; Matanao in Davao del Sur; and Polomolok and Tupi in South Cotabato.

Weaker vibrations, ranging from Intensities III to I, were also recorded in parts of Davao de Oro, Cotabato, Basilan, Zamboanga City, Maguindanao del Norte, Lanao del Norte, Sulu, and Bukidnon.

Aftershocks Expected, No Tsunami Threat

PHIVOLCS stated that structural damage is not expected from the tremor due to its offshore epicenter and depth. No tsunami warnings or advisories were issued following the event.

However, disaster management officials have advised the public to remain vigilant. Localized aftershocks are expected to continue over the next few days. Authorities are currently monitoring coastal and mountainous areas for any secondary hazards.
