NPC Demands Accountability: Meta, Roblox, Reddit, and Discord Hit with Show Cause Orders
In a major enforcement action targeting the safety of minors online, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) has issued Show Cause Orders to global digital platforms Meta, Roblox, Reddit, and Discord over alleged regulatory failures.
The regulatory body announced that the platforms failed to comply with mandatory data processing registration requirements under the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA), citing compliance metrics found across NPC Circular 16-03 and the updated registration framework of NPC Circular 2022-04.
The orders are part of a heightened enforcement wave by Philippine authorities. While the NPC investigates user data protections and age-verification gaps, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has concurrently given specific platforms a 24-hour ultimatum to establish physical local offices to answer for localized digital threats and safety risks.
"The safety, privacy, and overall well-being of our youth must always come first," the NPC stated, signaling aggressive legal checks against multi-national tech firms moving forward.
