Magnitude 4.2 Aftershock Rattles Bogo City, Parts of Cebu and Leyte

A magnitude 4.2 aftershock rattled northern Cebu on Tuesday afternoon, September 22, 2026, at 2:48 PM, nearly a year after the devastating 2025 Visayas earthquake.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the tectonic tremor occurred at a very shallow depth of 4 kilometers. The epicenter was recorded at 11.10°N, 124.07°E, or approximately 11 kilometers northeast of Bogo City.

The earthquake was felt across several areas in the Visayas region with the following intensities:

Intensity III (Weak): Daanbantayan, Cebu

Intensity II (Slightly Felt): Bogo City, Medellin, San Remigio, and Tabogon in Cebu; Palompon and Villaba in Leyte

Intensity I (Scarcely Perceptible): Santa Fe, Cebu; Cebu City

The tremor is a late-stage aftershock of the catastrophic magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck off the coast of Bogo City on September 30, 2025, which was tied to the movement of the Bogo Bay Fault. State seismologists reiterate that while aftershocks naturally decrease in frequency over time, occasional weak to moderate tremors can still be felt months or even years following a major seismic event.
