Sawa in the Stuffed Toys: BFP Rescues Reticulated Python Inside Dumaguete Thrift Store

A live reticulated python (sawa) was discovered hiding inside a display container filled with stuffed toys at a local ukay-ukay (thrift shop) in Barangay Calindagan, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, on the evening of Tuesday, August 5, 2026.

The Discovery

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Dumaguete City, a sharp-eyed customer looking through a "new arrival" batch of stuffed toys initially noticed a smooth, unusual object. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed to be a real snake blending in with the merchandise.

The Rescue Operation

• Emergency Response: BFP Dumaguete personnel arrived quickly to secure the commercial establishment.
• Snake Dimensions: Rescuers estimated the python measured 4 to 5 feet long and weighed approximately 3 kilograms.
• No Casualties: Authorities confirmed that no injuries, casualties, or property damage occurred during the panic or subsequent capture.

Final Disposition

The captured reptile was successfully turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for medical evaluation and eventual release back into its natural habitat.
