Portion of Aquino Bridge in Tarlac City Collapses Amid Heavy Monsoon Rains

A structural segment of the Aquino Bridge collapsed shortly before midnight on Friday, August 28, 2026, following relentless Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) rains and aggressive river currents. 

According to closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage released by the San Isidro, Tarlac City Information Office, a section of the bridge began tilting slightly around 11:30 PM. The beam segment completely ruptured and buckled at exactly 11:56 PM. 

Emergency engineering response began at 12:10 AM on August 29, 2026. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Tarlac 1st District Engineering Office mobilized a joint structural assessment team. This unit included personnel from the Tarlac Provincial and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (PDRRMO/CDRRMO), the City Public Order and Safety Office (POSO), and the City Engineer's Office. 

To guarantee motorist safety, authorities closed the bridge and installed hard barriers at the Sitio Molave Y-junction. All heavy equipment, trucks, and buses have been banned from the perimeter. Motorists are directed to utilize the nearby Agana Bridge, which serves as the primary alternate route while a comprehensive integrity evaluation is underway.

UPDATE | After the collapse of part of the Aquino Bridge, the Agana Bridge in Tarlac City, which was supposed to serve as an alternative route for vehicles, also collapsed last night, August 29, at around 7:40 PM. As a result, the local government and DPWH immediately issued new traffic guidelines and new routes for affected motorists.
