Manila Verifies Reported Arrest of Over 100 Filipinos in China; Teodoro Slams Move as 'Blackmail'

NEWS | The Philippine government is actively verifying the circumstances behind the reported arrest of more than 100 Filipino nationals in China, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced late Thursday night, August 13, 2026.

DFA Spokesperson Analyn Ratonel confirmed coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Beijing to ascertain the status of those apprehended and extend consular assistance. Meanwhile, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated actions were taken legally against over 100 Philippine nationals for allegedly living or working in China illegally.

Manila Urges Due Process and Welfare Safeguards

The DFA respects China’s right to enforce domestic immigration laws while urging Beijing to uphold legal procedures and guarantee detainee well-being. Ratonel emphasized that such enforcement must align with due process, reminding Beijing of notification mandates under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the 2013 Philippines-China Consular Agreement.

DND Links Arrests to Retaliatory 'Blackmail'

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. strongly condemned the crackdown as "plain and simple extortion and blackmail," suggesting Beijing is retaliating against recent Philippine law enforcement actions against illegal Chinese workers. Teodoro cited a May 2026 raid in Misamis Oriental involving 69 Chinese nationals. While the DFA has not officially tied the sweep to broader disputes, diplomatic posts remain on high alert.
