Magnitude 5.4 Quake Jolts Occidental Mindoro; Tremors Felt in Metro Manila

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck Occidental Mindoro on Friday morning, August 7, 2026, triggering strong shaking across parts of the MIMAROPA region and sending mild tremors into Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the tectonic tremor occurred at 10:38 AM. The epicenter was located 13 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Mamburao, with a shallow depth of focus of 14 kilometers.

Widespread Shaking Felt

The earthquake was felt at varying intensities across Luzon:

Intensity V (Strong): Felt by residents in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, as well as Calapan City, Naujan, Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, and Victoria in Oriental Mindoro.

Intensity IV (Moderately Strong): Recorded in Taal, Batangas, and the towns of Abra De Ilog and Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro.

Intensity III (Weak): Felt in Quezon City; Batangas City; General Trias, Cavite; and San Pedro, Laguna.

Intensity II (Slightly Felt): Noted in Parañaque City; Santa Cruz, Laguna; and Guinayangan, Quezon.

Instrumental Intensity Records

PHIVOLCS instrumental seismographs recorded the ground acceleration across a wider radius, logging Intensity II levels in several towns of Batangas, Quezon, and Romblon. Marginal Intensity I vibrations were also recorded as far north as Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and parts of Bataan and Bulacan.

No Damage Expected, Aftershocks Warned

Seismologists stated that the shallow earthquake is not expected to cause structural damage. However, the agency advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks are anticipated in the coming hours and days. Local disaster risk reduction and management councils are currently monitoring the situation, though no immediate casualties or major infrastructure disruptions have been reported.
