Magnitude 4.6 Earthquake Rattles Davao Occidental

A magnitude 4.6 tectonic earthquake jolted the waters off Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental early Friday morning, August 28, 2026, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The tremor occurred at 2:43 AM at an epicenter located 36 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos. The earthquake struck at a depth of 34 kilometers. According to state seismologists, the earthquake was felt at varying intensities in the following areas:

Intensity III (Weak): Malapatan, Sarangani

Intensity II (Slightly Felt): General Santos City; Tupi, South Cotabato

PHIVOLCS also recorded the following instrumental intensities through its earthquake monitoring network:

Intensity III: Malapatan, Sarangani

Intensity II: Digos City, Davao del Sur; Tupi, South Cotabato

Intensity I: Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Kiamba, Sarangani; Matanao, Davao del Sur

No immediate damage or casualties have been reported, and no aftershocks were expected.
