Instagram Launches Comprehensive Rebrand, Phasing Out Classic Cursive Wordmark and Square Grid

UPDATE | Meta-owned social media giant Instagram has officially rolled out its most significant visual and structural transformation in over a decade. The app-wide refresh, which went live this week, introduces a completely redesigned corporate identity, dynamic typography, and a fundamental restructuring of the platform's core user interface—effectively bringing an end to the platform's iconic square-grid era.

A New Visual Identity: The "Instagzam" Shift

At the forefront of the overhaul is a surprising change to Instagram's classic wordmark. For the first time in ten years, the platform has retired its signature fluid cursive lettering. In its place stands a brand-new hybrid print-and-script typography that breaks away from traditional script fonts. The bold design choice has already sparked widespread discussion across the internet, with users playfully dubbing the new logo "Instagzam" due to the sharp, zig-zag appearance of the newly styled letter "r".

Alongside the wordmark, the platform is expanding its native typography options for creators with a suite of new custom fonts. These include "Instagram Pen," a hand-drawn script design, and "Instagram Mono," a minimalist, typewriter-inspired monospace font intended to offer a cleaner tech aesthetic. The standard "Instagram Sans" typeface has also received a modern polish to maximize clarity and expressiveness across mobile interfaces.

The Death of the 1:1 Square Grid

Beyond mere aesthetics, Instagram is implementing a structural shift that fundamentally changes how content is viewed and curated. The traditional 1:1 square profile preview, a staple of the platform since its inception in 2010, is being systematically phased out.

Profile feeds are transitioning to a taller 4:5 or 3:4 aspect ratio layout to accommodate modern mobile photography. According to industry analysts, the update addresses a long-standing point of friction for creators whose vertical photos and videos were routinely subjected to awkward cropping in the square preview window. To support this new look, users can now publish uncropped 3:4 photographs directly to the main home feed.

To give users more aesthetic authority over these new vertical layouts, Instagram has quietly launched a manual reordering tool. This highly requested utility allows creators and brands to rearrange existing posts on their profile grids to curate a perfectly tailored layout without deleting or archiving older content.

Cinematic Formats and Granular Carousel Controls

The platform-wide update heavily prioritizes video and multimedia publishing. In response to the growing demand for high-production content, the platform now natively supports an ultra-wide cinematic ratio of 5120×1080 for Reels, stretching video content into an expansive widescreen format reminiscent of cinematic trailers.

Additionally, the functionality of multi-image carousel posts has been significantly upgraded. Instead of binding a single, overarching description to an entire post, creators can now assign distinct, slide-specific captions to individual images within a single carousel, allowing for deeper context and serialized storytelling.

The visual refresh is currently rolling out globally across all iOS and Android devices.
