Sotto Urges UP Law Graduates to Resist Systemic Corruption, Maintain Integrity

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto urged the 298 graduates of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law to resist systemic corruption and maintain integrity during their commencement exercises on July 11, 2026. As the guest of honor, Sotto delivered a realistic, often personal speech regarding the pressures young professionals face in Philippine governance.

'Don't Let the System Eat You'

Addressing the UP Law Class of 2026, Sotto tackled the common concern of how to avoid being "eaten by the system," warning that entrenched corruption is often masked as standard procedure. He encouraged graduates to choose integrity over convenience.

A Framework for Integrity

Drawing from his experience in passing anti-corruption reforms in Pasig, Sotto admitted that resisting the status quo can be isolating, noting he often feels frustration in his role. To combat this, he shared a personal checklist for ethical governance, advising the graduates to: Prioritize preparation over mere courage; Clearly define non-negotiables to avoid compromising principles; Place ethics above ambition; Actively fight cognitive dissonance in decision-making; Establish accountability loops with trusted colleagues.

No Single Messiah

Sotto concluded by emphasizing that national progress depends on collective accountability, not a single leader. He told the graduates, "There will be no savior of our nation," placing the responsibility for the future on their shoulders. The ceremony was attended by distinguished legal figures, including Solicitor General Darlene Berberabe.
