SERIES OF EARTHQUAKES JOLT PHILIPPINES; 5.3 MAGNITUDE QUAKE TRIGGERS AFTERSHOCK ALERT IN CATANDUANES

A rapid succession of tectonic earthquakes rattled multiple regions across the Philippine archipelago between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to official bulletins issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The seismic activity spanned from Luzon down to Mindanao, with the strongest event triggering an active warning for potential aftershocks in the Bicol Region.

Catanduanes Faces Aftershock Threat Following 5.3 Magnitude Quake

The most severe of the tremors struck offshore of Catanduanes at 11:10 PM on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. The tectonic event registered a strong magnitude of 5.3, with its epicenter located 61 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Baras.

The quake originated at a depth of 22 kilometers. Residents in Baras and the capital town of Virac reported shaking at Intensity IV (Moderately Strong), causing locals to rush outdoors. The vibrations traveled across the sea, registering at Intensity II across massive swathes of Northern Samar—including Catarman, Mondragon, and Laoang—as well as parts of Sorsogon.

PHIVOLCS has explicitly warned residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant, as aftershocks are actively expected from this event.

Metro Manila and Quezon Province Shaken by Offshore Magnitude 5.0

Just one hour prior to the Catanduanes event, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Quezon province at 10:11 PM on Wednesday. Centered 93 kilometers northeast of the island municipality of Jomalig, the tremor sat at a depth of 33 kilometers.

Though situated far offshore, the earthquake caused widespread swaying across mainland Luzon due to its structural magnitude. Intensity III felt-reports poured in from:

• Quezon City
• Jomalig, Polillo, and Burdeos (Quezon)
• Capalonga and Jose Panganiban (Camarines Norte)

Lighter Intensity II shaking was officially documented in Pasig City, Malabon City, and parts of Rizal. While the quake woke many residents across the National Capital Region, PHIVOLCS noted that no aftershocks or structural damages are expected from this specific source.

Double Aftershocks Rock Davao Occidental and Sarangani

In Mindanao, the municipality of Sarangani in Davao Occidental was hit by two consecutive earthquakes in a span of less than ten minutes on Wednesday evening.

The first recorded tremor hit at 9:16 PM with a magnitude of 4.8, centered just 11 kilometers southwest of Balut Island. It brought a sharp Intensity IV shaking to the local towns of Sarangani, Jose Abad Santos, and Glan. Moments later, at 9:23 PM, a magnitude 4.9 quake triggered nearly identical movements in the same vicinity.

State seismologists confirmed that both events are late-stage aftershocks stemming from the massive Mw 7.8 Offshore Sarangani and Mw 6.5 Offshore Davao Occidental earthquakes that struck the region in June 2026. General Santos City recorded an instrumental intensity of III during these movements.

Bohol Jolted by Shallow Thursday Morning Tremor

The most recent activity occurred on Thursday morning, July 30, 2026, at 11:21 AM, when a shallow magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck the island province of Bohol.

The epicenter was localized just 7 kilometers northeast of Sagbayan, a region previously known for major fault movements. Because the depth of focus was incredibly shallow at just 6 kilometers, the energy felt quite sharp locally, reaching Intensity IV in Sagbayan and Danao.

The shallow movement allowed seismic waves to cross the Cebu Strait, bringing weak Intensity II shaking to Cebu City and Intensity I to Lapu-Lapu City. Seismologists do not expect aftershocks or damage from this minor interior fault movement.

Local disaster risk reduction and management councils (DRRMCs) across all affected provinces are currently conducting routine assessments. Citizens are reminded to practice standard "Duck, Cover, and Hold" protocols during sudden seismic events.
