PAF Deploys Assets to Australia for Exercise Pitch Black 2026

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has initiated its deployment for Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Northern Australia, signaling a push to strengthen territorial defense and international partnerships.

PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Christina Basco confirmed the deployment of four FA-50PH Golden Eagle jets and one C-130 transport aircraft, supported by over 200 personnel now arriving at RAAF Base Darwin. The three-week, large-scale event, running from July 17 to August 7, 2026, involves 21 nations in simulated high-intensity combat scenarios.

Significant Participation

The PAF's FA-50PH fighters were among the first international aircraft to arrive, executing a, landing at RAAF Base Darwin on July 13. An advance team arrived earlier to set up logistical support. This marks the second consecutive time the Philippines has sent physical aircraft to the exercise, following a successful 2024 participation.

Operational Focus

Pitch Black 2026 focuses on complex, multi-national scenarios, with the PAF participating in counter-air operations. The deployment includes specialized air battle managers, with Col. Basco noting the exercise allows for learning as it progresses.

Regional Security Goals

Following a send-off by PAF Commanding General Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura at Clark Air Base, the mission aligns with the AFP's modernization goals. The exercise aims to develop a more agile air force while contributing to a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific alongside partners like the US, UK, Japan, and India.
