National Museum Opens First Central Luzon Branch in Baler; Marks Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day

The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) officially opened its doors to the public today, July 1, establishing its very first regional component museum in Central Luzon.

The landmark facility, designated as NMP-Baler, expands the agency's nationwide network to 22 institutional sites. It stands as a state-of-the-art hub designed to safeguard the distinct cultural identity, ecosystem, and historical legacy of Aurora province.

A Historic Inauguration

The museum’s formal inauguration took place yesterday, Tuesday, June 30, deliberately timed to coincide with the national observance of the 24th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day.

The event was marked by the unveiling of the official museum marker. High-profile dignitaries attended the ceremony, including: Spanish Ambassador Miguel Utray Delgado; Education Secretary Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara; Tourism Secretary Maria Bernardita Angara-Mathay; Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu-Laurel Jr.; and Presidential Son Vincent William Araneta Marcos

Local leaders, led by Aurora Representative Rommel Rico T. Angara and Baler Mayor Rhett Ronan T. Angara, praised the project as a monumental milestone that cements the province's place in national history. Local officials also credited the late Senator Edgardo Angara for initially championing the vision of bringing an NMP presence to the historic town.

Architectural and Architectural Design

Occupying an expansive 9,683-square-meter site, the building was designed by the renowned Architect Ed Calma. Its striking, contemporary structure draws inspiration from Aurora's raw topography, featuring layered steps reminiscent of the Banaue Rice Terraces that echo the peaks of the Sierra Madre and the curves of the Pacific coastline.

Permanent Galleries and Key Exhibits

NMP-Baler houses three primary, curated permanent galleries alongside selected masterworks from the National Fine Arts Collection:

Sierra, Tierra, Costa Gallery: Dedicated to the province's rich biodiversity. It explores Aurora's complex land-to-ocean ecosystems, indigenous knowledge systems, and regional traditions.

Cruce de Caminos Gallery: Features the Encuentros Vivos (Living Encounters) exhibition, mapping the deep historical and transoceanic relationship between the Philippines and Spain.

The Mariner's Astrolabe: A highly anticipated highlight of the museum's collection is an exceptionally rare, historic mariner's astrolabe on public display.

Prior to opening to the general public, the NMP conducted specialized walkthrough and exhibition validation sessions with local Indigenous Peoples representatives to ensure the displayed narratives remain inclusive and community-centered.

Visitor Information

In line with the mandate of the National Museum network, admission to NMP-Baler is completely free for all local and international visitors.

Operating Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily

Schedule: Open Monday through Sunday (closed on officially declared government holidays)
