National Crime Rates Drop by 20% Under DILG "Safer Cities" Push

Major crimes across the Philippines dropped by over 20 percent following the implementation of the Department of the Interior and Local Government's (DILG) Safer Cities Initiative, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Thursday.

Statistical indicators tracked by the PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM) revealed that incidents under the country's eight focus crimes plunged to 7,883 between April 6 and July 4, 2026. This represents a significant 20.6% decrease from the 9,506 cases documented in the prior quarterly evaluation period.

Significant Drops in Major Crime Categories

The downward trend was heavily driven by reductions across several high-priority peace and order categories. Law enforcement data highlights the following specific shifts:

• Carnapping of Motor Vehicles: Dropped by 34.15%, recording the largest percentage decline among property crimes.
• Rape: Decreased by 29.83% nationwide.
• Physical Injury: Dropped by 25.17% due to quicker police interventions during street altercations.
• Theft: Declined by 22.09%, reducing overall property loss reports.
• Robbery: Fell by 16.51% amidst tighter commercial security monitoring.
• Carnapping of Motorcycles: Declined by 14.73%.
• Murder and Homicide: Logged reductions of 11.22% and 10.43% respectively.

Intensified Local Ordinance Enforcement

PNP officials attributed the improved safety metrics directly to heightened police visibility and aggressive community-level policing. Under the leadership of DILG Secretary Juanito Victor "Jonvic" Remulla, law enforcement operations heavily penalized violations of municipal and city regulations.

Total operations against local ordinance infractions spiked by 21.74%, resulting in the booking, warning, or fine documentation of 936,290 violators. Police units focused on curfews, public drinking bans, and municipal safety guidelines, which authorities say effectively neutralized potential criminal behavior before escalating into major offenses.

Sustaining the Gains

The PNP stated it will continue to optimize its deployment strategies under the Safer Cities Initiative to maintain the momentum. Future adjustments will involve deeper collaboration with local government units (LGUs) to expand real-time closed-circuit television (CCTV) integration and increase night patrol frequencies in historically high-crime corridors.
