Marcos Meets Australia, Japan Top Diplomats to Bolster Strategic Ties

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reinforced the Philippines’ expanding strategic partnerships with key Indo-Pacific allies during separate courtesy calls with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in Malacañang on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

The successive high-level meetings, held at the Malacañan Palace Study Room, coincided with the start of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings hosted by Manila.

Diplomatic Milestone with Australia

The bilateral talk with Australia’s top diplomat arrived just weeks after the two nations celebrated a major historical milestone.

• 80 Years of Ties: The meeting highlighted decades of deep-rooted cooperation, following the official 80th anniversary of formal Philippines-Australia diplomatic relations on July 4, 2026.
• Bilateral Framework: The leaders underscored their commitment to a peaceful and stable region, backed by 124 existing bilateral agreements spanning defense, air services, and migration management.

Multilayered Cooperation with Japan

During his session with the chief executive, Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi conveyed Tokyo’s strong commitment to escalating relations with Manila amid shifting geopolitical complexities in the First Island Chain.

• Sustained Engagement: Motegi expressed Japan's deep interest in strengthening its bilateral partnership "in a sustained and multilayered manner".
• Historic Anniversary: The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) noted that the discussion serves as a prelude to the upcoming 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Japan.

Strategic Context in Manila

The courtesy calls took place as Manila temporarily transforms into the center stage for global Southeast Asian diplomacy. Over the week, Foreign Minister Wong] and Foreign Minister Motegi will join external partners from the United States, China, and the European Union for the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum.

The security-focused discussions in Manila are building blocks for the upcoming 49th ASEAN Summit, which the Philippines will host this coming November.
