Marcos Confers Presidential Citation on Alex Eala After Historic Wimbledon Campaign

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos hosted a special homecoming reception at the Malacañan Palace on Monday evening, July 13, 2026, to honor Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala following her historic breakthrough campaign at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.

During the ceremony titled "Tagumpay Natin Lahat" (Our Shared Victory) held at the Palace Ceremonial Hall, President Marcos conferred a prestigious Presidential Citation upon the 21-year-old athlete. The citation officially recognizes Eala’s exceptional talent, relentless perseverance, and her unparalleled contribution to Philippine sports on the global stage.

A Historic Milestone for Philippine Tennis

Eala arrived back in Manila on Sunday to a separate hero's welcome at the airport, fresh off a campaign that saw her rewrite tennis history for the Philippines. Seeded 29th at the All England Club, she shocked the tennis world in the third round by dethroning defending Wimbledon champion and World No. 3 Iga Swiatek in a stunning 7-6(9), 6-2 straight-sets victory.

With that win, Eala became the first homegrown Filipino player in the Open Era to advance to the Round of 16 (fourth round) of a Grand Slam singles tournament. Though her magical run was eventually stopped by eventual finalist Jasmine Paolini, her performance catapulted her to a new career-high Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world ranking of No. 28.

Speaking in front of sports officials, guests, and Eala’s parents, Mike and Rizza Eala, President Marcos highly praised the young tennis prodigy's demeanor both on and off the court.

"You have brought so much pride to the Philippines, to the Filipinos, and not only because of your success, but also because of the grace with which you handled that success," President Marcos said during his address. He further described her as a world-class champion who embodies the finest qualities and resilience of the Filipino nation.

Throughout the tournament, Eala also gained praise for subtly honoring her roots by wearing a sampaguita (the Philippine national flower) hair accessory during her matches—a gesture currently being put forward for a formal congressional commendation by lawmakers.

Looking Forward to the North American Swing

The Malacañang reception caps off a remarkable grass-court season for Eala, which also included capturing a WTA 125 singles title in Birmingham and a semifinal finish at the Berlin Open.

Eala expressed her profound gratitude to the President and the Filipino public, stating that the overwhelming support serves as immense motivation. The tennis star will take a brief break in Manila—including a scheduled fan-meet event on Wednesday—before flying to the United States to kick off her hard-court season at the Mubadala DC Open, followed by the Canadian Open, leading up to the US Open in August.
