Marcos, AWS Executives Tackle Proposed $5-B Philippine Cloud Hub Project

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday welcomed high-level executives from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to discuss a proposed US$5-billion investment designed to accelerate the country's cloud computing capabilities over the next 15 years.

The courtesy call centered on the tech giant's plans to expand its local footprint, highlighted by the potential establishment of a dedicated AWS Region in the Philippines. If realized, this dedicated infrastructure will provide local enterprises, startups, and government bureaus with faster, more secure, and highly reliable cloud services.

Direct Digital Transformation

The AWS delegation was led by Quint Simon, the Vice President for Public Policy in Asia-Pacific at AWS. Joining President Marcos Jr. in the meeting was Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda

According to Malacañang, the long-term investment aims to directly anchor the administration's national digital transformation agenda. By housing physical AWS data center infrastructure locally, the Philippine public and private sectors can benefit from lower data latency and strict compliance with national data residency regulations.

High-Value Job Generation

Beyond physical infrastructure, the PCO emphasized that the multi-billion dollar initiative is projected to generate thousands of high-value tech jobs for Filipino professionals. These jobs are anticipated to span advanced engineering, cloud architecture, cybersecurity, and operational maintenance fields.

This talks follow a broader push by the DICT to aggressively scale up the country's domestic data footprint to meet the demand of heavy enterprise migrations and booming AI workloads.

"This initiative supports our goal of transforming the Philippines into a premier regional hub for digital infrastructure," the PCO stated in a release following the meeting.

No official date has been confirmed yet for the final ground-breaking of the cloud infrastructure facilities.
