MANILA MARKS DECADE OF SEA VICTORY WITH GLOBAL ALLIES

The Philippines and its international allies marked the 10th anniversary of the historic 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Tribunal Award today with a powerful display of diplomatic unity, nationwide public demonstrations, and coordinated naval salutes.

A decade after the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague overwhelmingly invalidated Beijing’s expansive maritime claims, Manila used the milestone to reinforce its sovereign rights under international law.

The day’s commemorations began at dawn with a massive "National Peace Walk 2026" at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. Organizers drew thousands of participants, including civil society groups, student organizations, local fisherfolk, and high-ranking government officials. Addressing the crowd, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. emphasized that defending the West Philippine Sea is a collective national duty, urging citizens to remain steadfast in safeguarding the country's maritime domain.

Simultaneously, the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard conducted a coordinated maritime ritual across the archipelago. At exactly 10:00 AM, commissioned vessels stationed from Subic Bay to frontline outposts sounded ten long blasts of their ship horns. The simultaneous water salutes and synchronized flag-raising ceremonies across various naval operational commands served as a booming reminder of the country’s maritime heritage and unresolved territorial struggles.

Marcos Reaffirms the "Great Equalizer"

In the evening, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hosted a high-level Presidential Diplomatic Reception at the Conrad Manila in Pasay City. Speaking before members of the diplomatic corps, lawmakers, and security officials, President Marcos declared that the 2016 arbitral ruling remains a vital, unshakeable affirmation of international law.

"The rule of law is the great equalizer among nations," Marcos stated during his address, reiterating that the Philippines will not yield an inch of its territory but will always pursue peace through legal and rules-based mechanisms.

• The 14-Nation Joint Statement: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), alongside the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and several European nations, released a strongly worded joint declaration. The coalition reaffirmed that the 2016 decision is final, legally binding on both parties, and essential for maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.
• The European Union Declaration: In a separate statement, the EU High Representative, speaking on behalf of all member states, pressed for the full implementation of the ruling. The EU emphasized that compliance with the tribunal's framework is non-negotiable for guaranteeing a stable global maritime order.
