Manila and Quezon City suspend classes ahead of Marcos’ 5th SONA

The local governments of Manila and Quezon City announced on Thursday, July 23, the suspension of classes in all levels, both public and private, on Monday, July 27, 2026.

The widespread suspension aims to mitigate heavy traffic congestion and major road closures expected during the fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

According to separate advisories issued by the two local government units (LGUs), the order covers all educational institutions, including primary schools, high schools, and higher education units. The cancellation applies to both face-to-face classes and online learning modalities.

In Quezon City, where the President is scheduled to deliver his address at the Batasang Pambansa Complex, local officials signed an executive order to clear major thoroughfares for security protocols and the movement of delegates.

Meanwhile, the City Government of Manila confirmed its suspension to ensure the safety and convenience of students who commute through major transit lines connecting the capital to Quezon City.

Local traffic bureaus are expected to release alternative route advisories for motorists ahead of the scheduled July 27 closures.
