Flash Floods Hit Malaybalay City; 1 Dead, Hundreds Displaced

Heavy monsoon rains heightened by a passing super typhoon triggered severe flash floods in the Basakan District here on Wednesday afternoon, July 8, leaving one man dead and displacing over 600 residents.

According to the Malaybalay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), torrential rains intensified at around 3:00 p.m., rapidly inundating low-lying agricultural communities and residential zones.

One Fatality Confirmed

Local disaster officials confirmed that a 50-year-old male resident from Barangay Managok drowned after being swept away by violent flood currents. In Managok, one of the hardest-hit areas, water rose so rapidly that it overflowed a local spillway and completely submerged vast tracks of rice fields.

Extensive Submersion and Damage

The deluge severely affected several villages, including Barangays Violeta, Managok, and Miglamin. Multiple residential structures and school campuses were swamped by muddy water, stranding students and residents alike.

In Barangay Miglamin, a sudden landslide initially blocked a major road network, though emergency clearing crews successfully reopened the route later that evening.

Mass Evacuation Operations

A total of 211 families, compromising 619 individuals, were abruptly evacuated into emergency temporary shelters as search and rescue teams deployed across the district.

"Our priority is to save lives," said Aria Cagaanan, CDRRMO operations and warning officer. "If you notice rising floodwaters or feel that your safety is at risk, do not wait. Evacuate immediately to safer ground."

As floodwaters slowly began to recede late Wednesday night, emergency responders utilized rescue ropes to help stranded individuals, including young students, cross dangerous sections of flooded streets.

Local barangay officials and CDRRMO teams remain on the ground to conduct damage validation and continue relief distribution to displaced families.
