DepEd Reviews Health Protocols After Grade 4 Student Dies of Septic Shock Following Cavite School Deworming

The Department of Education (DepEd) has launched an immediate review of its school-based medical protocols following the death of a Grade 4 student in Trece Martires City, Cavite.

Official Condolences and Support

In an official statement released on Monday, July 13, 2026, DepEd expressed deep sympathies to the bereaved family of the learner, who attended the Hugo Perez Elementary School-Annex.

The agency announced it is actively coordinating with local officials to extend comprehensive assistance to the victim's family.

"We are providing the necessary emotional, psychological, and logistical support to the family during this difficult time," the DepEd statement read. "We want to assure everyone that the safety and well-being of our learners remain our highest priority."

Deworming Incident Investigation

The student passed away on July 3, 2026, just one day after participating in a mass deworming activity on July 2. The health initiative was organized by the school in coordination with the Trece Martires City Health Office.

Several other students from the same school also reported feeling unwell following the administration of the deworming medicine. According to initial medical findings, the Grade 4 learner succumbed to an infection that rapidly progressed to septic shock. Health authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine if the deworming medication directly caused or contributed to the fatal medical emergency.

Policy Review and Next Steps

In the wake of the tragedy, DepEd ordered a comprehensive evaluation of all school-based health and wellness programs nationwide to prevent similar incidents.

The DepEd Schools Division Office (SDO) of Cavite confirmed it is cooperating fully with health experts, local government units, and any legal inquiries into the matter.
