Barangay Installs Roadside Coffin as Grim Safety Warning to Motorists in Benguet

Motorists navigating the steep, winding terrain of the Benguet–Nueva Vizcaya Road were met with a startling sight this week: a white-painted coffin propped directly alongside the highway as a stark reminder of road safety.

The unusual setup was orchestrated by the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Ambuklao. Local leaders deployed the grim installation to combat a persistent surge of vehicular accidents caused by speeding and reckless driving on the highway's notoriously sharp curves.

Positioned underneath the coffin is a prominent signboard carrying a sobering message in Tagalog: 

"Paalala: Mr. Driver, ang mamatay o mabuhay ng dahil sa iyo. Ingatan ang nag-iisang buhay, magmaneho ng mahusay." (Translated: "Reminder: Mr. Driver, life or death is up to you. Take care of your only life, drive carefully.")

In a statement addressing the campaign, Barangay Ambuklao officials clarified that the visual tactic was not intended to frighten, offend, or disrespect commuters. Instead, they emphasized that the high-impact visual is necessary to shock drivers into compliance. Many motorists frequently ignore traditional road signs, often leading to severe accidents on the treacherous zigzag mountain corridors.

Images of the roadside coffin quickly went viral across various social media platforms. The campaign sparked heavy debate among netizens, drawing mixed reactions. While some online users found the strategy excessively morbid, many praised the community leaders for utilizing a highly effective and unforgettable visual deterrent to save human lives.

Local authorities continue to urge all commuters and visitors passing through the Cordillera region to prioritize defensive driving, observe speed limits, and strictly respect traffic laws to prevent further road tragedies.
