BAN Toxics Warns Public Against Toxic Viral ‘Food-Like’ Squeezy Toys

Toxic watchdog group BAN Toxics has issued an urgent warning to the public against purchasing viral, food-shaped "squeezy dumpling" and "steamed bun" toys due to a severe chemical hazard.

The trending toys, which visually mimic real food items, are currently flooding both physical markets and online e-commerce platforms. Analysts note they are widely accessible to children, retailing between ₱65 and ₱120 in brick-and-mortar stores, and ₱55 to ₱155 on online shopping sites.

Severe Chemical Risk

According to a data safety alert from the United Kingdom's Office for Product Safety and Standards, these specific toy products contain an excessive concentration of benzene, measured at 20mg/kg.

Health experts warn that while the toys appear harmless and entertaining, benzene is a highly hazardous carcinogen. Regular exposure or ingestion can lead to severe, long-term health complications in children.

Call for Government Intervention

In response to the proliferation of these items, BAN Toxics has urged immediate regulatory intervention from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and various Local Government Units (LGUs).

The group is demanding a coordinated response to protect public health, specifically calling for:

• Nationwide post-marketing surveillance to track down distribution networks.
• Immediate confiscation operations in retail hubs.
• The issuance of official public health advisories to inform families.
• Strict product recall mandates to strip the items from circulation.

The watchdog group concluded its statement with a strong appeal to parents, guardians, and consumers to exercise extreme caution and entirely avoid purchasing these unverified, trending products.
