ASEAN Diplomats Meet Myanmar Counterpart in Bangkok to Break Post-Coup Impasse

Top diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) convened an informal meeting with their Myanmar counterpart on Sunday in an effort to break a multi-year diplomatic impasse.

The high-level talks, chaired by Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro in her role as the ASEAN special envoy to Myanmar, marked the first face-to-face ministerial meeting with Myanmar's top diplomat since the 2021 military coup. Hosted by Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the crucial dialogue aimed to address the severe isolation and ongoing civil war gripping the resource-rich nation.

Push for Normalcy Amid Skepticism

The meeting in the Thai capital brought together regional ministers to listen to updates from Myanmar’s junta-appointed foreign minister, U Tin Maung Swe. Following the closed-door session, Secretary Lazaro announced plans to embark on a humanitarian mission to the strife-torn nation later this year, noting that Myanmar's leadership welcomed the proposal.

Despite the diplomatic icebreaker, the engagement faces deep regional skepticism. Rights groups and lawmakers, including the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), warned against legitimizing the military junta. Critics also highlighted that the talks moved forward without firm enforcement timelines or updates on the bloc's stalled Five-Point Consensus peace plan.
