A powerful 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Burias Island on Tuesday afternoon, sending residents rushing out of homes and compounding fears from a stronger earthquake that hit the same area just a day prior.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the tectonic tremor at 3:04 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The epicenter was located approximately 20 kilometers west of the municipality of Claveria, with a shallow depth of focus of 5 kilometers.

Ongoing Earthquake Swarm

The Bicol Region has been on high alert as the municipality has become the epicenter of a continuous seismic sequence over the last 32 hours. The sequence of significant tremors includes:

• July 13, 8:53 a.m.: A precursor magnitude 4.8 earthquake.
• July 13, 8:54 a.m.: The main magnitude 5.4 earthquake.
• July 14, 9:03 a.m.: A morning earthquake measuring magnitude 4.2.
• July 14, 3:04 p.m.: The strong magnitude 5.2 afternoon tremblor.
• July 14, 3:18 p.m.: A subsequent magnitude 4.8 tremor recorded just 14 minutes later.

Shaking Felt Across Regions

The 3:04 p.m. tremor triggered varying levels of shaking across the Bicol Region and nearby provinces, disrupting daily activities and causing temporary panic.

According to PHIVOLCS, the earthquake was felt at Intensity III (Weak) in City of Legazpi, ALBAY; CITY OF NAGA; Gumaca, San Narciso, and San Andres, QUEZON; Bulan, Casiguran, City of Sorsogon, and Juban, SORSOGON, where hanging objects swung noticeably.

Meanwhile, high-precision seismic sensors recorded the following instrumental intensities:

• Intensity III - City of Legazpi, ALBAY; Gumaca, QUEZON; City of Sorsogon, SORSOGON
• Intensity II - Tabaco, ALBAY; Sipocot and Pili, CAMARINES SUR; Aroroy, MASBATE; Mulanay, QUEZON; Bulusan, SORSOGON
• Intensity I - Jose Panganiban, CAMARINES NORTE; Sagñay, Camarines Sur; City of Roxas, CAPIZ; Panganiban, CATANDUANES; Boac, MARINDUQUE; Batuan, MASBATE; Mauban, QUEZON; Prieto Diaz, SORSOGON

Damage Assessment and Safety Warnings

Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs) in Masbate immediately deployed teams to inspect coastal villages and municipal infrastructure. No immediate structural damage or casualties have been reported as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Because the epicenter is located offshore, authorities clarified that no tsunami warnings were raised. However, PHIVOLCS keeps warning the public to remain vigilant. Residents in the affected areas are advised to inspect their homes for minor cracks, secure heavy furniture, and review local emergency evacuation protocols.
