Two student-athletes from the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) men’s basketball team tragically drowned after being swept away by a powerful ocean current during a team-building activity on Monday afternoon, June 8, 2026.

The victims were identified by local authorities as Divine Adili, 21, and Rene Clert Baterbonia, 19. Both were part of the university’s sports program and were visiting the province for an off-season team-bonding excursion.

Swept by Strong Currents

According to reports from the Aurora Police Provincial Office, a group of players went swimming in the coastal waters of Dipaculao when they were suddenly caught in a heavy undertow.
While two other teammates managed to fight the current and swim back to safety, Adili and Baterbonia were dragged into deeper water.

Responders and local lifeguards launched an immediate rescue operation. The two unconscious athletes were pulled from the water and rushed to a nearby hospital, but medical staff declared them dead on arrival.

Initial Findings and Safety Questions

Superintendent officials stated that initial investigations point to a "pure accident," citing the unpredictable and strong ocean currents in the area. Police have found no initial signs of foul play.
However, the tragedy has sparked immediate calls for accountability. Speaking to local media, the mother of Rene Baterbonia expressed immense grief and questioned the lack of strict safety protocols during the trip. She raised concerns over whether the players received a proper safety orientation before entering the water, noting visible bruises on her son's body and demanding a deeper investigation into the university’s oversight of the trip.

National Sports Agency Intervenes

In response to the incident, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) announced it is actively coordinating with local law enforcement and school officials. The PSC intends to review existing safety guidelines for student-athlete training camps, out-of-town seminars, and external team-building exercises to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Ateneo de Manila University has yet to release a full formal statement regarding the specific liabilities and logistics of the trip as the community mourns the sudden loss of the two young players.
4:02 PM - June 13, 2026 — In a stunning escalation to the controversy surrounding the Ateneo de Manila University basketball program, Efthymia “Efi” Baldwin, the estranged wife of Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin, has released a video statement alleging she previously warned university officials that “children are not safe around him”.

The video was published on Saturday by Auckland-based barrister Tudor Clee. It arrives exactly one week after the tragic June 8 drowning deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building and conditioning activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

Allegations of Administrative Inaction

In the video statement, Efi Baldwin claims she officially fled her husband in early 2020 for safety reasons. Following her departure, she states she repeatedly pleaded with Ateneo leadership to remove the American-Kiwi tactician from his position on campus, explicitly citing safety concerns for youth under his supervision.

Instead of addressing her warnings, Efi Baldwin alleges that the university administration subjected her to a coordinated effort to suppress her claims.

"I tried to warn Ateneo university. I told them children are not safe around him. They responded with a campaign of intimidation and silencing," Efi Baldwin stated in the video.

A Program in Crisis

The domestic allegations layer a deep systemic crisis onto an athletic program already reeling from a criminal investigation.

Just 24 hours prior to the video's release, Coach Tab Baldwin broke his silence in an emotional public apology, acknowledging a total failure of oversight. The apology followed the deaths of Baterbonia, a promising rookie recruit, and Adili, a Nigerian center, who both swept out to sea during an early-morning team run on an open beach in Aurora province. Local authorities and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) are currently conducting parallel probes into potential negligence during the university-sanctioned trip.

University Silence

The timing of the video places intense pressure on Ateneo de Manila University's administration, which had previously announced an independent internal review into the drowning incident.

As of Saturday evening, neither the Ateneo administration, the Blue Eagles athletic department, nor Tab Baldwin’s legal representatives have issued a response regarding the domestic allegations or the alleged cover-up.
