SHALLOW EARTHQUAKE SWARM JOLTS ANTIQUE; PHIVOLCS MONITORS WESTERN VISAYAS TREMORS

A series of tectonic earthquakes jolted the waters off the southern tip of Antique between Sunday night and Monday morning, keeping residents across Western Visayas on high alert.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed that the seismic activity is part of a localized earthquake swarm. The strongest event—a magnitude 4.7 earthquake—struck at 11:34 PM on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Midnight Shaking

The magnitude 4.7 quake was centered 48 kilometers southwest of Anini-y. It registered a shallow depth of focus of only 10 kilometers. Because shallow earthquakes occur close to the Earth's surface, their shaking is often felt more sharply by nearby communities.

This midnight tremor was preceded by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake at 9:06 PM on Sunday, located 39 kilometers southeast of the same municipality. The subterranean unrest continued into Monday morning, June 15, 2026, when a magnitude 2.8 aftershock was logged at 7:20 AM.

Regional Intensities

The consecutive tremors triggered varying levels of ground shaking across Panay Island, Guimaras, and parts of Negros Occidental:

Instrumental Intensities:
Intensity III - City of Sipalay, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL
Intensity II - City of Bago, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL; Anini-y and Culasi, ANTIQUE; Buenavista and Jordan, GUIMARAS; CITY OF ILOILO
Intensity I - Sebaste and Valderrama, ANTIQUE; Nueva Valencia, GUIMARAS; Tapaz, CAPIZ; City of Passi, ILOILO

Local disaster risk reduction and management offices (DRRMOs) reported that the shaking caused brief panic in coastal villages. However, no immediate structural damages or casualties have been documented.

Tectonic Context

State seismologists explained that earthquake swarms involve a cluster of closely spaced quakes without a single, massive mainshock. These are common in the Philippine archipelago due to active local faults and nearby trenches.

Officials clarified that this Western Visayas swarm is entirely independent of the catastrophic magnitude 7.8 earthquake that devastated parts of Mindanao just one week prior, on June 8, 2026.
Local government units in Antique and neighboring Iloilo have advised the public to remain vigilant, inspect homes for minor cracks, and remember the "Duck, Cover, and Hold" protocol during subsequent tremors.
