Controversial drag artist Pura Luka Vega has once again ignited intense public discourse after participating in a religious service where they helped administer Holy Communion.
The service was organized by the Open Table Metropolitan Community Church (MCC), a progressive, LGBTQIA+-affirming Christian denomination located in San Juan City. Photos posted on social media by the church documented the event, which took place during a special Pride Month worship service.
Altar Participation and Nazarene-Inspired Attire
During the Sunday service, Vega—who uses they/them pronouns—stood at the altar to distribute what appeared to be consecrated Eucharistic bread to members of the congregation.
For the gathering, the performer wore a gleaming gold strapless gown paired with black gloves and long wavy hair. Observers noted the styling bore a strong visual resemblance to the Black Nazarene, a revered Roman Catholic icon of Jesus Christ in the Philippines.
In a public statement accompanying the photos, Open Table MCC warmly welcomed the performer.
"Today is a very special day because we are joined by Pura Luka Vega to celebrate and to serve communion with us," the church stated.
Church leadership explicitly framed the collaboration as a message of religious inclusion for minority groups. They added that the service aimed at "reclaiming our space as queer people and as a marginalized community, because the Eucharist is a sacrament that is an Open Table for all."

This latest public appearance marks a significant return to the spotlight for Vega, who spent years navigating severe legal repercussions following a viral July 2023 drag performance.
In that incident, Vega wore an outfit resembling Jesus Christ while performing an upbeat, remixed version of "Ama Namin" (The Lord's Prayer). The performance triggered widespread outrage from conservative religious groups and the Catholic leadership, culminating in several municipal declarations labeling the artist persona non grata and a series of criminal complaints.
Vega was arrested in October 2023 under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, which penalizes indecent shows that offend race or religion. Following a prolonged legal battle, a Manila regional trial court fully acquitted Vega of the cybercrime-related charges. At the time, Vega consistently maintained that the performance was an intentional challenge to traditional notions of worship and a valid expression of their queer Catholic faith, rather than an attempt to demean religion.
