The National Capital Region (NCR) cemented its decades-long dominance in Philippine youth sports, capturing its 19th consecutive overall title as the historic 2026 Palarong Pambansa officially concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony on Sunday, May 31, at the Datu Lipus Makapandong Cultural Center in Prosperidad.
Dubbed Palaro Tu Agsur 2026, the 66th edition of the national games marked the first time Agusan del Sur hosted the prestigious event, fulfilling a 33-year-old dream for the province.
NCR Retains Crown; Calabarzon, Davao Region Secure Podiums
NCR's powerhouse delegation proved unstoppable once again, hoarding gold medals across multiple sporting events to defend its position at the top of the national standings. Regional sports powerhouse Calabarzon finished a strong second, while the Davao Region secured third place overall.
In addition to their medals, winning student-athletes are set to receive cash incentives from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to support their athletic development.
During the closing rites, Agusan del Sur Governor Santiago Cane Jr. turned emotional as he expressed his gratitude to the thousands of athletes, coaches, and spectators who traveled to the province. He praised the local organizing committee and residents for proving that Agusan del Sur is fully capable of staging a massive, world-class national sporting event.

The definitive highlight of the ceremony was the traditional turnover of the Palarong Pambansa banner. Governor Cane officially handed the flag to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, solidifying Quezon City as the host for the 2027 Palarong Pambansa.
The 2027 games will mark a historic homecoming for the national sporting event, returning to Quezon City exactly 60 years after it last hosted the games in 1966.
Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara, who witnessed the turnover alongside top education and sports officials, expressed total confidence in Quezon City's infrastructure and readiness. Mayor Belmonte, accepting the hosting duties, vowed that Quezon City is prepared to give the nation's best student-athletes a "champion's experience" next year.
The ceremony concluded with the emotional lowering of the Philippine, DepEd, and Palarong Pambansa flags, followed by the formal extinguishing of the Unity Cauldron, signaling the end of a historic week of camaraderie and sporting excellence in Mindanao.
