President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. held a "productive" telephone meeting on Monday morning, June 1, 2026, to discuss economic cooperation, energy challenges, and security priorities in the South China Sea.
The high-level talk, confirmed by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), underscored the mutual commitment of both nations to reinforce their long-standing alliance.
Strengthening Regional Security
According to statements from MalacaƱan Palace and US State Department spokesperson Thomas Pigott, a key focus of the discussion was maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deterrence and safeguarding the freedom of navigation and overflight amidst ongoing regional maritime tensions.
The dialogue coincides with a milestone year for the two treaty allies, who are commemorating 80 years of diplomatic relations and 75 years as formal alliance partners under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.
Economic Hubs and Energy Initiatives
On the economic front, the United States reaffirmed its support for major infrastructure projects in the Philippines, specifically the development of the Luzon Economic Corridor. This trilateral initiative involving the US, Japan, and the Philippines aims to transform the areas connecting Subic Bay, Clark, Metro Manila, and Batangas into a globally competitive transport, logistics, and clean energy hub.
“Our exchange underscored our countries' mutual commitment to strengthening the PH-U.S. alliance and addressing shared regional interests,” President Marcos said in a statement released on social media.
The phone call comes shortly after President Marcos concluded an official state visit to Japan, where similar defense resilience and economic supply chain strategies were prioritized.
