Five IAF Personnel killed in Assam Military Transport Crash
The Soviet-designed, twin-engine turboprop aircraft, belonging to the IAF’s 43 Squadron, was performing a scheduled cargo and routine training mission when the mishap occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time.
According to military officials and initial reports, the aircraft veered off the runway, skidded across a parallel taxiway, broke apart into two pieces, and burst into flames shortly after touchdown. Ground firefighting and rescue teams immediately rushed to the scene to contain the blaze. No casualties or injuries were reported among ground personnel at the airbase.
The Indian Air Force formally confirmed the tragedy, expressing deep sorrow and stating that the airmen made the "supreme sacrifice" in the line of duty.
The five deceased personnel have been identified as: Squadron Leader Prashant Singh (Pilot), Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniveervayu Khemaram Kumawat, and Agniveervayu Danish Alam
A sixth crew member, identified as the co-pilot, survived the impact with severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby military hospital where he remains in serious condition.
Following the crash, defense authorities cordoned off and sealed the entire Jorhat Air Force Station, restricting all civilian access while high-ranking IAF officials arrived to oversee emergency management.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed profound anguish over the loss, stating, "Their courage and service to the nation will always be remembered with pride and gratitude." Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also offered condolences and assured full state support to the military authorities.
The IAF operates a fleet of around 105 Antonov An-32 aircraft, which serve as the backbone of its tactical transport operations, particularly in the mountainous regions of northeast India. A formal Court of Inquiry has been ordered by the military command to determine the exact technical or environmental causes behind the fatal landing accident.
