A ceiling panel collapsed inside the Bicol International Airport (BIA) passenger terminal building on Thursday evening, June 25, 2026, triggering an immediate safety response but resulting in no casualties.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) confirmed the incident on Friday, assuring the public that structural integrity inspections are underway to prevent future hazards at the premier tourism gateway.

Emergency Response and Containment

According to airport authorities, a single ceiling panel detached and crashed to the floor at approximately 5:50 PM. The incident occurred within the terminal’s busy "Well-Wishers" area, directly in front of an airport restaurant where travelers and families frequently gather.

First responders from the Civil Aviation Security Bureau (CSIS) Landside Unit and the Airport Medical Team reached the area within minutes of the collapse. Medics checked the vicinity, but officials confirmed that no passengers, visitors, or airport staff sustained injuries.

Ground personnel immediately cordoned off the affected perimeter. Access to the immediate commercial row was restricted as a precautionary measure to guarantee public safety while debris was cleared.

Structural Assessments and Repairs

By Friday morning, airport engineering teams had launched a comprehensive structural assessment of the terminal's ceiling framework to determine the exact cause of the panel failure.

"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern this incident may have caused," Del Rosario said in an official statement. "We assure the public that immediate preventive measures are already being undertaken to address the issue and to ensure that similar incidents do not happen again."
