Torrential rains hit Davao City, flooding Buhangin parish church
Heavy, continuous rainfall triggered localized flooding in parts of Davao City on Monday evening, May 18, 2026, sending floodwaters directly into a local parish church in the Buhangin district.
Photos shared by the St. Mary of the Perpetual Rosary Parish showed floodwaters inundating the main nave of the church, covering the floors and surrounding the pews. The sudden rise of water inside the place of worship caught local churchgoers and residents by surprise as intense downpours battered the city during the evening hours.
Local weather conditions in the region have been increasingly unstable, with localized thunderstorms causing rapid runoff in low-lying urban areas. Emergency responders and local government units in Davao City continue to monitor heavily affected communities, clear clogged drainage systems, and assess the total damage brought by the overnight inundation. Church volunteers have also begun cleanup operations to remove mud and debris left behind as the floodwaters receded.
