RESIDENTS CAPTURE GIANT PYTHON AFTER LIVESTOCK DISAPPEARANCES IN BUENAVISTA

A massive reticulated python that had been terrorizing livestock owners in Barangay Lipata, Buenavista, Marinduque, was finally captured by local villagers on Saturday, April 25. The capture followed a string of mysterious disappearances involving farm animals in the community.

The snake was discovered inside a deep hole, or "snake pit," shortly after it had preyed upon a six-month-old pig. According to witnesses, the pig weighed approximately 25 kilograms—a meal so large it left the python visibly bloated and unable to make a quick escape.

Video footage captured by onlookers showed the intense effort required to extract the reptile. Villagers worked together to pull the python from its hiding spot, revealing a specimen measuring over nine feet (292 centimeters) in length.

Provincial Veterinarian Dr. JM Victoria noted that the snake likely used its immense strength to constrict the pig before swallowing it whole. While the capture has provided some relief to the neighborhood, local authorities have urged continued vigilance, as residents claim to have spotted even larger snakes roaming the nearby brush.

The python was safely turned over to the Marinduque Animal and Wildlife Rescue Emergency Response Team. The team will monitor the animal’s health and ensure its proper relocation to a forested area far from residential zones, balancing public safety with wildlife conservation efforts.
