The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Pederasyon of Pasig City has taken a decisive step toward modernizing local sports traditions by passing a resolution to discontinue the long-standing "muse" competitions. This move signals a significant shift in the city’s youth governance, aiming to replace pageantry with merit-based representation that prioritizes gender sensitivity and inclusivity.

For decades, the "Search for the Muse" has been a staple of the Filipino paliga (sports league), where young women are judged primarily on physical appearance during the opening ceremonies of basketball and volleyball tournaments. However, the Pasig SK Federation argues that this practice often leans toward objectification and distracts from the core values of athleticism and sportsmanship.

Under the new resolution, the federation encourages barangay youth councils to refocus their resources on the athletes themselves. Instead of crowning muses, the SK aims to recognize "merit-based" ambassadors—youth leaders and athletes who embody discipline, team spirit, and community service. The reform seeks to create a "safe space" for all participants, ensuring that the spotlight remains on the talent and hard work of the competitors rather than traditional beauty standards.

The push for reform aligns with the broader mandate of the SK Reform Act (R.A. 10742), which tasks youth leaders with promoting social equity and progressive development. Several barangays in Pasig have already begun implementing the change, with local leaders noting that the budget previously allocated for pageantry costumes and prizes will now be redirected toward better sports equipment and training programs for the youth.

While the "paliga" remains a central part of community life in Pasig, it is now entering a new era. By dismantling outdated traditions, the SK Pederasyon is setting a precedent for other cities in the Philippines to follow, proving that the spirit of competition is best celebrated through skill, character, and equal opportunity for all.
