PART OF CALLAWA-MANDUG BRIDGE IN DAVAO CITY COLLAPSES DUE TO SEVERE FLOODING
Transportation and connectivity between two major barangays in the city were disrupted after a portion of the Callawa-Mandug Bridge collapsed in Purok 2, Barangay Callawa, on Monday night, May 18.
According to a preliminary report from the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the bridge’s foundation and structure gave way when it encountered the strong flow of floodwaters. The flooding was the result of incessant and heavy rains brought by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and easterlies currently prevailing in the region.
In photos and videos taken by Davao CDRRMO and residents, the extensive damage was seen where a portion of the cement bridge connecting Brgy. Callawa and Brgy. Mandug was completely destroyed and fell into the river. Because of this, the bridge was immediately declared "impassable" or impassable to any type of vehicle.
As of this writing, no injuries or fatalities have been reported in the incident. However, damage assessment and clearing operations are ongoing by relevant government agencies to determine the total extent of the damage.
Appeal to Motorists and Residents
Local authorities have already issued an official advisory for public safety:
Use Alternative Routes: All motorists, particularly those traveling to and from Mandug and Callawa, are advised to take safe and alternative routes first.
The CDRRMO also advised residents living near riverbanks to remain vigilant against sudden increases in water levels due to continued rains.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is expected to issue an additional statement regarding the repair and rehabilitation plan for the destroyed bridge.
