The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Habagat, today, May 30, 2026.

Monsoon Shift Confirmed

Meteorological observations over the past several days confirmed a distinct shift in regional weather patterns. Weather scientists noted the consistent dominance of southwesterly wind flows over the western seaboards of Luzon and Visayas, signaling the end of the dry season.

An active tropical cyclone currently traversing the Philippine Sea has further accelerated this transition. The storm's dynamics effectively pulled and intensified the westerly wind currents across the archipelago.

What to Expect

The state weather bureau warned the public to prepare for changing weather conditions. The declaration brings several immediate impacts:Frequent Rainfall: Expect regular to heavy downpours, severe thunderstorms, and gusty winds.Vulnerable Areas: The western sections of Luzon and Visayas will bear the brunt of the initial monsoon rains.

Precursor to Rainy Season: Forecasters clarified that while Habagat is active, the official rainy season is expected to follow within the next two weeks.Monsoon Breaks: The season will still feature "monsoon breaks," which are extended periods of dry, sunny weather lasting several days or weeks.

Safety Advisory Issued

PAGASA advises local government units and residents in low-lying or mountainous areas to monitor daily weather updates closely. The combination of monsoon rains and localized thunderstorms elevates the risk of flash floods and rain-induced landslides.
