Mt. Apo Eyes 2027 UNESCO Global Geopark Status Following UNACOM Endorsement
Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, is one major step closer to securing a historic international title. The UNESCO Philippine National Commission (UNACOM) has officially endorsed the mountain's bid to become a UNESCO Global Geopark by 2027.
The formal nomination dossier is scheduled for submission to the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, in November 2026. If approved, Mt. Apo will become only the second UNESCO Global Geopark in the Philippines, following the successful inscription of the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark.
A Shift in Conservation Strategy
Standing at 2,954 meters above sea level, Mt. Apo has long been a crown jewel of Mindanao’s natural landscapes. Local stakeholders initially sought a UNESCO World Heritage Site declaration back in 2009. However, the peak was delisted from the tentative pool in 2015 due to growing environmental challenges, including illegal logging, poaching, and agricultural encroachment.
In 2021, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) shifted tactics, spearheading a new campaign focused on the global geopark framework. Unlike World Heritage Sites which look exclusively at natural or cultural preservation, a UNESCO Global Geopark emphasizes a holistic model. This combines the strict protection of unique geological heritages with sustainable local eco-tourism and community education.
Earthly Wonders and Tribal Heritage
Geologists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau highlight Mt. Apo’s immense scientific value, pointing out that its iconic boulder face, active sulfur vents, ancient craters, and thermal lakes serve as living proof of the mountain's ancient volcanic history.
Beyond geology, the framework champions the human history tied to the landscape. The Protected Area Management Office of Mount Apo Geopark has actively integrated the cultural legacy of local indigenous groups—such as the Bagobo-Tagabawa Tribal Village in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur—into the nomination profile.
Multi-Sectoral Mobilization
A massive, multi-regional effort is underway to prepare the site for international evaluators. DENR Regions 11 and 12, alongside surrounding local government units (LGUs), recently executed simulated validation settings, community mock interviews, and geo-education workshops for local school principals.
Local governments are reinforcing the bid through policy. Davao City has passed a dedicated Mt. Apo Geopark Ordinance, legally declaring the mountain a geological monument. Meanwhile, municipalities like Sta. Cruz are enforcing regulated, eco-conscious mountaineering footprints.
An official UNESCO validation mission is scheduled to arrive at Mt. Apo this coming August to inspect key geosites, marking the final crucial evaluation phase before the Paris submission.
The Roadmap to Inscription
The path to securing the international title follows a strict multi-phase timeline. With the local endorsement from UNACOM successfully completed, the next critical hurdle takes place in August 2026, when an official UNESCO field validation team will arrive on-site to inspect the mountain's core geosites.
Following the field assessment, the formal nomination dossier will be officially submitted to the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, in November 2026. If the site successfully navigates the rigorous international evaluation process, Mt. Apo is projected to receive its official UNESCO Global Geopark inscription by mid-2027.
