META UNVEILS GLOBAL PAID SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK, AND WHATSAPP IN MASSIVE REVENUE PIVOT
Meta has officially launched a sweeping array of paid subscription plans globally for its primary apps, introducing Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus.
Announcing the rollout on Instagram, Meta’s head of product Naomi Gleit explained that the new tiers are designed to offer users deeper features and personalization options while keeping the core, ad-supported apps free to use.
This pivot marks a massive effort by Meta to diversify its revenue beyond traditional digital advertising. The push comes at a time when the tech giant is navigating immense capital spending on artificial intelligence data centers and infrastructure.
Premium Features for Everyday Users
The initial consumer-facing tiers are rolling out globally with a low-cost, platform-specific pricing structure:
Instagram Plus ($3.99/month): Features aimed at active users and creators, including story rewatch statistics, the ability to extend stories beyond 24 hours, and anonymous story previewing. It also includes unlimited story audience lists, "Super Heart" reactions, custom app icons, and unique profile fonts.
Facebook Plus ($3.99/month): Includes enhanced profile customization, advanced audience reach tools, better profile analytics, and the capability to keep user stories visible for up to 48 hours.
WhatsApp Plus ($2.99/month): Centers around heavy messaging personalization, allowing users to pin up to 20 additional chats, access premium stickers, and configure custom ringtones or exclusive app themes.
The Roadmap to "Meta One"
Looking forward, Meta plans to eventually merge its various standalone offerings into a singular umbrella ecosystem called Meta One. Concurrently with the flagship app release, the company has begun piloting several next-tier subscriptions aimed at heavy AI users and commercial brands:
Meta One AI Tiers: Designed for power-users of its AI tools, Meta is rolling out a Meta One Plus plan ($7.99/month) and a Meta One Premium plan ($19.99/month). These unlock higher compute capacity for complex tasks ("Thinking mode"), larger file upload sizes, and expanded video- and image-generation capabilities. Testing for the AI tiers begins next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia.
Meta One Creator & Business Tiers: Geared toward brand development and visibility, the Essential tier ($14.99/month) offers impersonation protection and a verified badge. The Advanced tier ($49.99/month) pushes visibility via higher feed rankings, placement in Facebook feeds, and the exclusive ability to add active links inside Instagram posts and Reels. Testing for these begins in regions like Bangladesh, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco.
These tiers will operate alongside Meta's pre-existing Meta Verified protection program and the ad-free compliance plans previously established in Europe.
