A strong Magnitude 5.0 tectonic earthquake shook parts of Mindanao on Saturday evening, prompting state seismologists to warn the public of imminent aftershocks and potential structural damage.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the tremor struck at exactly 7:25 PM on May 16, 2026. The epicenter was located 9 kilometers northwest of the municipality of General Salipada K. Pendatun in Maguindanao del Sur, with a shallow depth of focus of 18 kilometers.

In an updated advisory issued at 11:10 AM on Sunday, PHIVOLCS officially confirmed that local communities should prepare for infrastructure damages and subsequent aftershocks.

Severe Shaking Felt at Epicenter

The earthquake triggered Intensity V (Strong) vibrations at the epicenter in General Salipada K. Pendatun, as well as in M'lang, Cotabato; Tantangan, South Cotabato; and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat. Residents in these areas reported strong shaking that caused hanging objects to swing violently and heavy furniture to move.

Meanwhile, Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) motion was felt across a broader area, including Koronadal City, Tacurong City, and various municipalities across Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, and Cotabato. This level of shaking is typically strong enough to rattle doors, windows, and glassware.

Wide-Scale Impact Across Mindanao

The geographic reach of the quake extended across several provinces, registereing across various intensities:

Intensity III (Weak): Felt in major urban centers including General Santos City and Cotabato City, alongside parts of Maguindanao del Norte.

Intensity II (Slightly Felt): Detected as far north as Cagayan de Oro City, Kidapawan City, and municipalities within Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur.

Intensity I (Scarcely Perceptible): Recorded in Kadingilan, Bukidnon.

PHIVOLCS instrumental networks corroborated these human accounts. Localized seismic sensors registered peak ground acceleration at Instrumental Intensity V in M'lang, Cotabato and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat.

Disaster Authorities On Alert

Regional and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs) have deployed teams to assess local infrastructure, roads, and residential areas for cracks or structural failures.

Local officials urge residents to inspect their homes thoroughly, secure unstable household objects, and remain vigilant against potential secondary hazards as aftershocks continue to hit the region. No casualties have been officially reported as of press time.
