LANDSLIDE AND SEQUENCING FLOODS RECORDED IN DAVAO CITY
A rain-induced landslide and severe flash floods hit several residential areas across Davao City on Monday night, May 18, 2026, forcing localized emergency evacuations as an intense weather disturbance battered the Southern Mindanao region.
The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) is actively monitoring the affected districts, following a series of relentless downpours that caused vital river systems to swell past critical thresholds.
Landslide Near Residential Zone
The landslide struck late Monday evening directly adjacent to a residential pocket inside Prestige Subdivision, Barangay Cabantian. According to initial field reports from responding units, the sudden collapse of soil sparked immediate panic among nearby families.
Lokal disaster officials and emergency teams are conducting validation and structural assessments to check if any homes sustained severe damage or if immediate evacuations are required for the perimeter. No casualties have been officially reported at the site, but emergency teams remain on high alert.
Widespread Urban and Flash Flooding

Simultaneously, the unrelenting downpours triggered cascading urban flash floods, turning key thoroughfares and low-lying neighborhoods into virtual rivers. Deeper flood zones saw water levels climbing rapidly, trapping some residents inside their properties.
The primary areas hit by severe inundation include: Cabaguio, Buhangin, NHA Maa (where deep chest-high floodwaters prompted immediate water search and rescue operations), and Matina Pangi (which triggered Code Red sirens along the Matina River channel, forcing families into local emergency gymnasiums)
Weather Analysis: The ITCZ Threat
According to the latest meteorological bulletin from DOST-PAGASA, the sudden influx of severe weather is driven directly by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) currently blanketing Southern Mindanao. The weather bureau warned that the system is generating heavy cloud clusters capable of producing localized thunderstorms, severe lightning, and sustained heavy downpours.
Because the soil in Davao's mountainous terrain is already heavily saturated from consecutive days of intermittent rain, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) re-issued a warning that several communities remain highly susceptible to flash floods and sudden mass wasting events.
Local Government Emergency Response
The Davao City Government has mobilized all Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees (BDRRMCs) to secure riverbanks, pre-position rescue vehicles, and prepare central evacuation centers.
Disaster officials continue to remind the public to monitor official social media channels, pack emergency grab-bags, and voluntarily move to higher ground if local river levels begin to rapidly surge.
