From Mayon To Pop Culture: Twin AI Hoaxes Prompt Public Warnings

A wave of sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) hoaxes hit both government communication and the local entertainment scene on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, prompting a joint defense from state scientists and P-pop management.

The separate incidents involve a viral astronomical optical illusion over Mayon Volcano and a deepfake commercial advertisement targeting BINI member Mikha Lim, exposing the growing threat of realistic digital manipulation.

PHIVOLCS Debunks Viral Mayon 'Meteor Strike' Video

The first incident occurred after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared genuine automated footage from its Ligñon Hill IP camera. The clip, recorded at 10:33 PM on Monday night, originally appeared to show a brilliant space rock streaking directly into the northern slopes of Mayon Volcano in Albay.

However, social media accounts quickly weaponized the clip, using AI to generate heavily altered, realistic videos showing a literal cataclysmic explosion and impact on the active volcano. The dramatic altered footage quickly accumulated mass views, causing panic among Albay residents.

By Tuesday afternoon, PHIVOLCS issued an urgent correction.

"Our review of seismic, infrasound, and additional camera footages around the volcano indicate that the meteor disintegrated while in the atmosphere and did not strike the slopes of Mayon, contrary to our initial post," the state agency clarified, urging citizens to stop sharing the doctored AI variations.

Hours later, the management of the widely popular P-pop group BINI was forced to launch its own counter-offensive against digital forgery. Fans and consumers noticed highly polished, realistic-looking promotional materials circulating on social media that depicted BINI member Mikha Lim endorsing a beauty brand.

The group's agency officially stepped forward to clarify that the media campaign was completely synthesized.

"Please be advised that the material is AI-generated and unauthorized," BINI_ph stated in an urgent advisory. "We strongly urge everyone to refrain from engaging with the post to prevent misinformation."

Management reminded the public that legitimate brand partnerships, contracts, and endorsements are exclusively rolled out through BINI’s official, verified channels.

The Escalating AI Misinformation Landscape

The simultaneous hoaxes underscore a concerning reality in the country's digital spaces: AI-generated disinformation no longer looks obvious or amateur. It now mimics professional brand marketing and authentic governmental sensor data, making visual verification remarkably difficult for the average internet user.

Authorities from both sectors are appealing to internet users to verify context, check primary sources, and avoid rapid-fire sharing of highly sensationalized digital content.
