Philippine actress and social media influencer Awra Briguela has elevated her online call-out into formal legal and administrative action, reporting a faculty member of the Universidad de Manila (UDM) over alleged transphobic and degrading remarks.

The controversy began on May 16, 2026, when Briguela shared a screenshot of a vulgar comment left by a university professor under a social media post showcasing her beach photos. The educator reportedly left a crude remark targeting her gender identity, sparking immediate backlash from fans and advocacy groups.

Not an Isolated Incident

Following her public disclosure, Briguela disclosed that several students and alumni reached out to her with similar accounts of inappropriate behavior by the same instructor. On Tuesday, May 19, Briguela personally met with UDM President Ma. Felicia Joy S. Adriano and officials from the Youth Development and Welfare Bureau to formally submit her grievance and seek systemic accountability.

Briguela explained on Instagram that she pursued action to combat discrimination, stating that such behavior should not be normalized, especially from educators. She emphasized that institutions must be safe spaces, free from humiliation.

In a public statement, the Universidad de Manila confirmed an investigation is underway, led by the school's Gender and Development (GAD) Office. The administration stated it does not condone behavior that is demeaning or discriminatory and reiterated its commitment to an inclusive environment.

Sectoral Backing and Calls for Legislation

The incident has sparked broader discussions, with the Gabriela Women's Party condemning the professor's actions and renewing calls for the passage of the SOGIESC Equality Bill. Representative Sarah Elago emphasized that discriminating against individuals based on gender identity is unacceptable.
