Residents of Viga, Catanduanes were shocked after the discovery of a large whale that was no longer alive and washed ashore on the beach of Sitio Iho, Brgy. Batohonan this Thursday, April 30.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) immediately contacted the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to examine the remains of the said marine mammal. According to authorities, the assessment is important to determine the exact cause of the animal's death—whether it was due to natural causes, illness, or if it was related to pollution and human activities in the ocean.
Aside from the examination, BFAR is also focusing on the proper disposal or burial process for the whale. This aims to prevent bad odors and health threats that its decomposition may cause to nearby communities, while adhering to existing environmental guidelines.
