JUNE 8: FIRST DAY OF CLASS
Why not June 1?
While the first week of June traditionally signals the start of academic preparations, classes for the School Year 2026-2027 will officially begin on Monday, June 8, 2026. The week leading up to this date, specifically June 1 to 5, is dedicated to the annual Brigada Eskwela and final enrollment period to ensure all public schools are physically and administratively ready to welcome learners.
The Shift to a Trimester System
This school year marks a historic shift for Philippine basic education as the Department of Education implements DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026. Under the leadership of Secretary Sonny Angara, public schools will transition from the long-standing four-quarter system to a three-term or trimester calendar. This change is designed to improve the quality of learning by providing more focused instructional periods and reducing the clerical burden on teachers.
The Academic Roadmap
The upcoming school year consists of exactly 201 class days, carefully distributed across three distinct terms to balance learning and rest. The first term runs from the opening day on June 8 until September 15, 2026, followed immediately by the second term which concludes on December 18, 2026, just before the holiday break. After the New Year, students will return for the third and final term on January 4, 2027, with the school year officially closing on April 8, 2027.
A Focus on Enrichment and Recovery
A key feature of this new calendar is the inclusion of an Enrichment Block at the end of every term. During these two-week windows, the department will prioritize the Academic Recovery and Accelerated Learning (ARAL) Program to assist students who are struggling with their lessons. Simultaneously, these periods provide a much-needed wellness break for teachers, allowing them to catch up on administrative tasks without the pressure of active daily instruction. Following the conclusion of the school year in April, students and faculty will enjoy a month-long school break from April 9 until May 9, 2027.
