2026 NAVOTAS FIRE SMOG
Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze at Navotas Sanitary Landfill
Video: Miranda News Philippines / YouTubeEmergency crews are continuing suppression efforts at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill in Barangay Tanza 2 after a massive fire broke out Friday night, sending plumes of toxic smoke over parts of Metro Manila. As of Saturday morning, April 11, 2026, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) declared the fire under control, though "pockets of fire" deep within the waste mountain remain a challenge.
Incident Timeline and Response
The blaze began at approximately 7:59 PM on Friday, April 10. Due to the landfill's "island-like" geography—accessible primarily by barge—initial responding units faced significant logistical hurdles. Low tide and muddy terrain prevented fire trucks from immediately reaching the site, forcing authorities to rely on watercraft and specialized equipment.
By Saturday morning, the BFP confirmed the 40-hectare facility was contained, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby residential communities. To combat the deep-seated hotspots, personnel are using backhoes to dig through layers of garbage, allowing water to penetrate the source of the heat. The Philippine Air Force has been placed on standby for aerial water-dropping operations if the situation escalates.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has declared the fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill in Brgy. Tanza 2 as “fire under control” this Sunday morning, April 12, 2026, after more than 20 hours of extinguishing. Mopping-up operations and monitoring of the area are still ongoing to ensure that the fire is completely extinguished and prevent re-ignition. Three days after the fire broke out, the Navotas Sanitary Landfill fire, which was first reported on April 10, 2026, remains active.
According to the Navotas BFP, operations have been temporarily suspended due to the danger it poses to firefighters. Although the fire is now under control and the thick smoke has subsided, residents are still complaining of coughing due to the pungent odor that still lingers in the area.

Environmental and Health Concerns
The landfill has been non-operational since August 2025, yet the accumulation of organic waste continues to pose risks. Investigators suspect the fire may have been triggered by spontaneous combustion—a common occurrence in landfills where trapped methane gas ignites due to high temperatures—or the accidental ignition of discarded flammable materials like butane canisters.
The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-NCR) has issued a stern warning to residents in Navotas, Malabon, and northern Manila. The smoke generated by the burning plastic and chemical waste is highly toxic.
Safety Advice: Residents are urged to keep windows closed, stay indoors, and wear N95 masks if they must go outside.
Casualties: Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported as of Saturday evening.
Operational Challenges
Navotas City officials noted that while the fire is contained, "total extinction" may take days. Landfill fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish because they burn deep underground where oxygen is limited but heat is intense.
Authorities are currently monitoring air quality levels in the CAMANAVA area to determine if further evacuations or health alerts are necessary.
