PAGASA Warns of ‘Very Strong’ El Niño Through Mid-2027

The state weather bureau DOST-PAGASA has issued a stark warning over an intensifying climate pattern, alerting the public that the current strong El Niño is expected to peak as a "Very Strong" event before the end of 2026. According to the latest climate models, this extreme weather phenomenon is projected to persist through the first six months of 2027.

 The intensification into a "Very Strong" El Niño will occur between September and December 2026, with its effects lingering until mid-2027. Weather specialists emphasized that while the system triggers severe agricultural dry spells and water supply stress, rainfall will not stop entirely. Communities must prepare for a dangerous combination of widespread drought conditions punctuated by sudden, localized heavy downpours driven by active tropical cyclones and the ongoing Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

Authorities are strongly urging the public, local government units, and climate-sensitive sectors—such as agriculture and energy—to immediately implement strict water conservation and proactive emergency mitigation measures before the full brunt of the crisis strikes.
