Filipino-American guard Jordan Clarkson etched his name into basketball folklore, celebrating the New York Knicks’ 2026 NBA Championship by proudly hoisting the Philippine flag during a massive ticker-tape parade through Manhattan on Thursday afternoon (Friday morning in Manila).
The celebration marked a major cultural milestone as Clarkson officially became the first-ever player of Filipino descent to lift the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

A Historic Walk Down the Canyon of Heroes

Riding atop an open-top bus alongside his teammates, the 34-year-old veteran guard unfurled the blue, red, and yellow flag to deafening cheers from a crowd that included thousands of Filipino-American fans. The parade route along the historic "Canyon of Heroes" was blanketed in an estimated 2,500 pounds of confetti to honor the team’s dominant 4-1 Finals series sweep against the San Antonio Spurs.

The victory ended a grueling 53-year title drought for the Knicks franchise, who last won a championship in 1973. New York also added this championship directly on top of their 2025 Emirates NBA Cup victory from earlier in the season.

Giving Inspiration to the Homeland

Clarkson, a mainstay of the Philippine men's national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, embrace his role as a bench spark plug throughout the historic playoff run. He averaged 8.6 points per game during his debut season in New York after joining the team following a six-season stint with the Utah Jazz. Notably, his biggest contribution came during Game 3, where he knocked down 10 points—highlighted by a buzzer-beating, Hail Mary three-pointer to close out the third quarter.

“Definitely inspiring to the Filipino-Americans and Filipinos all around the country,” Clarkson remarked regarding the historical gravity of his Finals appearance.

The cultural impact resonated far beyond the streets of New York, sparking massive watch parties and celebrations across the Philippines despite the parade airing in the early morning hours locally. Clarkson even received a celebratory FaceTime call from boxing icon Manny Pacquiao shortly after securing the historic ring.
