DEATH ON THE TRACKS: PASSENGER TRAINS COLLIDE IN FATAL ELSTOW CRASH

A train driver has died and 89 passengers are injured following a major two-train collision on the Midland Main Line near Elstow, Bedfordshire.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:12 PM on Friday, June 19, 2026, when a London-bound East Midlands Railway passenger service struck the rear of a stationary train. Emergency services, including the East of England Ambulance Service and the British Transport Police, quickly declared a major incident at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the driver of the moving train sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Of the 89 injured passengers, 33 have been transported to local hospitals. Medical officials report that 11 individuals remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, 22 suffered serious trauma, and 56 others were treated for minor cuts and shock.

Initial reports indicate that the first train, traveling from Nottingham to London St Pancras, had come to an unexpected halt due to a technical fault. The following service, traveling from Corby, failed to stop in time and collided with the rear of the stationary carriage.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched a full investigation to determine why signaling systems or automatic braking protocols failed to prevent the crash. Rail services along the affected route remain completely suspended today as recovery teams work to clear the wreckage and repair damaged infrastructure.
